Scene 1
  Black - Film lines
  Red - Off stage directions
  Blue – Camera actions

[The first scene begins in the Italian Pizzeria’s kitchen, Luigi is working in the kitchen, washing pots with his back turned to the camera. Luigi is dressed smartly as a professional looking chief. Then, Mario walks in with a stack of plates, looking scruffy and messy with flour all over himself. The shot is a long shot and shows both Mario and Luigi’s full body and the setting of the scene.]
Luigi:      [In kitchen washing pots with back turned to the audience]
Mario:   [Walks into kitchen with a pile of plates walking towards  Luigi. As he gets closer, he drops the plates which smash. Luigi then turns towards Mario– shocked face when happening]
Luigi:      [Slowly turns around and looks at the ground at the smashed plates, then becomes angry and starts waving his arms around frantically] Mario?! Look you are so stupid! Why did I even hire you?!
Mario:   [Shrugs shoulders]
Luigi:      You know what? You have one last chance tonight or you… [uses thumbs to mime slitting throat, then walks out of kitchen]
Mario:   [Turns to face the camera] Oh no! [Gets a broom from kitchen and begins to sweep smashed plates]
Luigi:      [Leans into kitchen] Two very important customers will be here soon, get busy [leans back out of kitchen]
Mario:   [Stands and thinks for a moment, stands up and points figure in the air. Camera slowly zooms into Mario’s face then stops at a close up] I have an idea! [Fades out onto next scene]
Scene 2
[Fades into scene from previous scene. The second scene begins in the seating area of the restaurant where Luigi is stood waiting to greet guests. Rosa and Rosa’s Dad enter from the left into the restaurant and are greeted by Luigi and then seated. The shot is a long shot and shows the character’s full bodies and the setting of the scene.]
Luigi:      [Stood near door, waiting for Rosa’s Dad to walk in]
R.D:        [Walks into restaurant, shakes Luigi’s hand, pats him on back]
Luigi:      [Puts hand up in the air to symbolise his happiness that Rosa’s Dad is here]
R.D:        I would like you to meet my daughter, Rosa. She is joining me this evening. [Turns to the left and extends his arm]
Rosa:     [Enters from the left and holds her father’s arm]
Luigi:      [Takes off chiefs hat] Welcome Madam, please let me escort you both to your table [Walks towards a table in the middle of the setting. Camera slowly tracks forwards to follow the characters to the table.]
R.D +R: [Both follow Luigi to the table]
R.D:        [Sits down at table and puts napkin on knee]
Luigi:      [Pulls out Rosa’s seat for her to sit down as well as putting napkin on her knee]
Rosa:     [Sits and smiles at Luigi for his politeness]
R.D +R: [Both pick up menus and open to look at]
Luigi:      [Walks into kitchen, leaves the restaurant on the right hand side and enters kitchen from the left. Camera pans in a right direction to follow him into the kitchen. When Luigi enters the kitchen, he is alone and he begins to frantically look around] Mario? Mario?! Where are you, our guests are here!
Mario:   [Enters from the right dressed as a very different smart waiter and walks towards Luigi] I am here and I am ready to serve
Luigi:      [Shocked face] Mama Mia, it is a miracle! Come quickly!

Costume Research

Rosa's Dad - Rosa's Dad needs to look important when he is in the restaurant because he has to put pressure on Mario seeing as he wants his daughter's hand. Therefore, I have decided to dress the actor who is playing Rosa's Dad as a 1920's gangster like in the photo above. Italy is a well-known play for mafias, gangsters and mobs therefore; I felt that it would fit in with the theme of the location. This style of outfit will make Rosa's Dad look very important.

Rosa - Rosa has to look like a very important women being the daughter of an gangster/mafia member. During the 1920's, American women got the vote and women began to feel more in dependant. A lot of rebellion began amongst the female population around the world and because of this, fashion changed dramatically. Women began cutting off their hair to a short bold bob style and wearing outfits not fitted to a female shape as a masculine fashion came into fashion as women felt more dominant wearing more manly clothes like in the photo above. However, feminine fashion was still in fashion amongst women because although they wanted to dress manly as a sign of progression, they still wanted to keep their own unique feminine qualities. This saw feminine cut coats with fur come into fashion. Taking this fashion history into consideration, I will dress Rosa in a floaty/manly fitted dress and a coat with a fur collar.

Mario - This character will have two looks one being a scruffy waiter wearing a white apron with flour all over his face, the second look being a sophisticated 1920's Italian waiter in a suit and bow tie. In the 1920's, it was popular for waiters to wear a white suit jacket with black trousers and bow tie like in the photograph above. However, I want it to be obvious where the film setting is with regards to the country. So, I have decided Mario will have a long swirly moustache due to this being stereotypically known to be associated with Italians, especially people who work in Italian restaurants. Additionally, it will add to the comedy genre of the film, a character wearing an over exaggerated moustache.

Luigi - This character will look very smart because he takes his job and business very seriously, as well as knowing he will be confronted by a very important and dangerous man. The above poster is a poster for an Italian brand of pasta from the 1920's. It portrays the stereotypical image of an Italian chief and gives me a good in site into what people who lived during this time period would expect an Italian chief to look like.

Script Mock-up - 1st scene

I have decided to work on my script scene by scene as I can then work on each scene until it is how I see as perfect. Also, if I write my script this way, it gives me chance to do other work at the same time and develop my script slowly with regards to props, location, costumes, etc.
Within the script, I have included the lines of the actors and the off stage directions as I want to be very specific about my script and I want my script to bee seen as very professional. I have not yet added camera movement due to the fact this is only a 1st mock up and I can develop this over time when I have chosen a location and I know the area and the camera, etc.

Scene 1
  Black - Film lines
  Red - Off stage directions
Green – Camera actions (added at a later time)

[The first scene begins in the Italian Pizzeria’s kitchen, Luigi is working in the kitchen with his back turned to the camera, then Mario walks in]
Luigi:      [In kitchen making a pizza with back turned to the audience]
Mario:   [Walks into kitchen and stands next to Luigi with back to the audience and tries to join in, tries to kneading the dough, whilst doing this, takes a step away from, Luigi turns to the side so he is facing sideways to audience and drops it on Luigi’s head – shocked face when happening]
Luigi:      [Slowly takes pizza dough off dead, turns onto a side facing sideways to the audience and then frantic and angrily waving his arms around] Mario?!
[Sits on stool and scratched head]
Luigi:      [Leans into kitchen] Two very important customers will be here soon, get busy [leans back out of kitchen]
Mario:   [Stands up and points figure in the air] I have an idea!

Aims and Context

My aim I to create comical humour to an audience by using the four main stylistics; mise-en-scene, cinematography, sound and editing).

In my previous AS level of film and media, I learnt how to use programmes such as Adobe Photoshop and Adobe Premier, as well as learning the four main film language stylistics, camera angles, camera shots, etc. I will be using these previously learnt programmes and topics when creating my film.

As I am creating a 1920’s styled silent black and white film, I have researched other silent black and white films released during this time period such as 'The Music Box' directed by James Parrott, released in 1932 and 'The Kid' directed by Charlie Chaplin, released in 1921, and researching films stars such as Laurel and Hardy and Charlie Chaplin.

I will be taking on all the roles when creating this film (script writer, camera technicican, editor, director and producer). The only role I will not be taking, is the acting role.

I aim to target this film at an older audience as opposed to aiming the film at a younger mainstream audience as due to this films nosalgia, I feel it would be more appriciated and enjoyed by an older audience and an audience that can relate to this style of film.
Synopsis of film: Mario is a fun loving kind hearty Italian who works at a Pizzeria in the heart Italy, but he has one problem. He is the clumsiest person who ever lived! His boss, Luigi is a grumpy old man who wants everything done his way, or no way at all. Luigi gives Mario one last chance to prove himself worthy of keeping his job after giving him a number of chances, the same night the woman of his dreams comes into the restaurant, with her Dad, one of the most wealthiest and well known businessmen in Europe. Her name is Rosa and she is the most beautiful woman in the whole of Italy. Mario has a hectic night in front of him, he must: impress the girl of his wildest dream,  impress Rosa’s father, keep his job and impress Luigi and the most important thing, not look like a fool while he does it!

Prop, Costume and Location List

I have decided to do a prop and location list at the same time as writing my first mock up for my script because as I go through the process of writing my script, I feel that I may come up with ideas which may include props/location and I can add these ideas to this list as my script develops
So far, I have decided the following props/costumes will be essential:
  • (Costume) Aprons, chief hat, checkered/stripy trousers, bow tie, white dinner jacket - these costumes are for Mario and Luigi. The reason I feel that these props/costumes are essential is because it fits in with the mise-en-scene of the scene, time period and created realism due to the waiter(Mario) and chief(Luigi) wearing professional clothing.
  • (Costume) 1920's black vintage suit & dress, cigarette holder, long black tie - these costumes will be for Rosa and her father. These outfits are needed just like the costumes above as they fit in with the mise-en-scene of the scene and time period. I will be researching at a later time the fashion style of this time period.
  • (Props) Pizza dough, waiting platter, plates, broom, cutlery, tables, chairs, napkins, salt & pepper, candles, paintings, Italian flag, ashtray - these props will be included in the kitchen sink mise-en-scene and will be mostly in the background and some pieces may not even be touched/moved, however play an important role in creating realism. I want some props included in the scene to be detailed showing how high class the restaurant actually is, like the photo below. In this photo, a delicate display of drinks and tea accessories, etc.

(Location) The location of my filming will be set in an Italian restaurant in Italy. I will be filming my whole film in two rooms, both decorated to look like an Italian restaurant. One room will be transformed into a restaurant kitchen and the other, into a dining space for an Italian restaurant. An important feature to keep in mind when choosing the location (decoration wise) and choosing props, is that due to the fact the film is a silent film, it is set in the early 1990's and therefore, the time period must be kept into consideration before making all decisions.
A famous Italian cafe/restaurant I will be researching is cafĂ© Florian - one of the oldest Italian cafe's in the whole of Italy. I will research this cafe to get inspiriting visuals for my set.
